2025 - into our 18th Year
Throughout 2025, we continued with our initiatives to encourage greater squash participation by Women & Girls', as well as reaching out to local Primary Schools to attract and encourage new juniors to consider our sport.
We also welcomed several new members this year; the Squash Wales Academy Squad at the Club continues to do well and has produced a National Champion; the internal uplift and maintenance of the Club was started in the Mens toilet area and we're hopeful that, during 2026, a Cricket Wales Grant will allow some further works in the shower area, as well as through into the Ladies area.
Some highlights from 2025 ...
Starting off a New Year ...
The first Ladies session of 2025 on 4th January, was well supported by a group of six.
This FREE SESSION each Saturday (10.30 - 12.00) continues as an important initiative to help encourage and increase participation in our sport, in particular, by women and girls.

New faces at Second Ladies session
Severe weather, but we opened !
At the beginning of January, there was snow and severe icy conditions around the Brymbo area, but the Squash Club has remained open for play.
We said "farewell" to Alasdair
At the end of January, Alasdair Blundell left Wrexham for a move to the Manchester area with his partner.
During his time at the Squash Club, Alasdair embraced the Club's desire to encourage young people into squash and, in 2024, successfully completed his Level 2 Coaching Award; he was also a Club Committee member and Team player.
We thanked Alasdair and wished him well for the future.

International Women's Day
On 8th March, we hosted our usual Ladies Squash session but in support of International Women's Day.
As part of that Day, we worked with Wrexham Council's Active Wrexham Team who were promoting all of the amazing women and girls sporting sessions and Clubs being delivered cross the area.
Giving their support
New court heaters now fitted
In mid-March, the Club had two new court heaters installed; hanks to a Sport Wales Energy Efficiency Grant.
There was some disruption to court availability, while the old Ambirad heaters were removed and the new heaters were installed; but important as we continued to improve the Squash Club for the benefit of all our members. We acknowledge the support from Gareth Lloyd at BS≻ in particular, it was Gareth's work helped us achieve this Grant.
Our new look heater
Fans show their support ...
In April, Liverpool won the 2024-25 Season Premier League title and some of our members wanted to celebrate this achievement !
Showing their colours !
BACK to BACK to BACK
We support our Town and history was made on 26th April 2025 as Wrexham AFC topped Division 1 and, for the third consecutive season, gained promotion to The Championship - this a brilliant achievement, a huge boost for the Club, the Town and for Wales.

AGM - UPDATE
The Club's 2025 Annual General Meeting took place on 29 May - some of the highlights were:

* A push to continue with an upgrade of the Club, especially the toilet areas.

* An Honorary Membership goes to - Brian Wynn.
We also thanked the input from our two Committee members who were stepping down this year - Tom Trueman and Alasdair Blundell.
2025 AGM Note
Courts closed for four days
From 29th May until 2nd June, we closed both courts for 4 days of essential maintenance - the court walls were filled, where appropriate, painted and re-marked, then needed time to both dry and "cure".
Work almost completed
A difficult decision ...
At the end of the 2024-25 Season in NWCSL, the Club' Committee members decided that we should take relegation from Division 1
This followed a difficult season for our First Team in the top Division of North West Counties but we did hope, to have two teams competing in the 2025-26 Season.
2025 British Open Champions
On 8th June, at the British Open Championships in Birmingham the Ladies Final was won by Nouran Gohar (Egypt) who beat Nour El Sherbini by 3-2.
In the Men's Final, Number Two seed, Diego Elias (Peru) beat Number One seed, Mostafa Asal (Egypy) by 3-1.

Ladies Summer sessions ...
During June, July and August, it was agreed the Ladies Sessions should change from Saturday to a Wednesday evening, between 6.45 and 8.15.
This was a temporary arrangement for the Summer, until September - to acknowledge that there are many different family commitments at this time of year, with the weekends being precious.

DHENIS STAFFORD
On 27 June, we were sorry to hear that one of our Club members and Team player, Dhenis Stafford had passed away on the Intensive Therapy Unit at Shrewsbury Hospital, having been originally admitted on 4 June.

Following in Pete's footsteps ... !
Further congratulations to Jon Davies who took three trophies at the Cheshire Closed Tournament at The Bowden Squash Club on 19 October.
Three Finals in one day - JD won the Squash O45s and O50s titles, as well as the Cheshire Racketball Championship - quite some going.
JD is not the first WBSC member to become the Cheshire O50s Mens Champion - it had been won previously by Pete Lee, back in 1996.
JD was presented with The Nick Gatwood Trophy by Marion Gatwood (see below).
A past WBSC member, was also in the Finals [Men's B Event] - Alasdair Blundell (now Grove Park) beating Joss Atkinson (Bowdon) 3-1.

No Fast & Furious in 2025 ...
With great regret, there was no Fast & Furious Christmas Competition this year.
For a number of reasons, our members were unable to commit to the date set for this year's event, BUT we will try to arrange it again in December 2026.
Refurbishment - not ready for Christmas!
Our much awaited work to refurbish the toilet areas of the Club commenced on 8th December and was scheduled for completion prior to Christmas.
One late factor in the schedule was the intervention by the Cricket Club who needed to seek grant aid to improve the whole area for men and ladies - this outcome is awaited (March 2026).
The original schedule comprised two phases; initial Phase 1 works are to take place in the Mens' area - with a new ceiling, one additional fan, plus upgraded toilet ware and panneling, with All of the costs for this project met by an agreed three-way split - between the Squash and Cricket Clubs, together with the Brymbo Sports & Social Complex.

Our Teams in 2025 ...
2024 - 2025 Season
First half completed ...
The first half of the 2024-25 Season was completed at the Club on 17 December but, with some good news and some bad.
Congratulations to our North East Wales Team on finishing with a win over Midtown to take the League title (see below). In NWCSL, a depleted but determined First Team lost their re-arranged match to the NWCSL leaders, Warrington (again, see below).
North East Wales CHAMPIONS
Huge congratulations to all those who've played in our North East Wales Team, as they finish top of the League in the Winter 2024 Season.
Our Team completed their season on 17 December with an emphatic 4-1 win over the Midtown Team; winning the League by 10 points - a fantastic result for the Club and everyone involved.
It's tough at the top
We welcomed back George Thomas a friend of the Club on 10 December and straight into the First Team for a crucial match against Alderley Edge.
George is back home in North Wales for Christmas from New Zealand, where he works as a Squash Coach to 14 regional clubs near Christchurch.
Due to injury and others not available, we were struggling for this important match, which we lost out 5-0. Credit to all players for a great match, especially to Stan Sykes and Will Silvester both going close, losing out at 3-2.
George Thomas
Rearranged match with League leaders
The much anticipated match with mighty Warrington was played at the Club on 17 December, with some stars of the game in action.
Despite our own problems through injury and non-availability, it was a compelling, quality match. There were two current Welsh Champions in Tesni Murphy (World Ranking 21) and Joel Makin (World Ranking 6) plus the ever improving 19 year old, Jonah Bryant (World Ranking 49).
We lost the match 5-0 but there was huge effort from all of our Team - George Thomas was at No.1 against Joel Makin (0-3), Tesni Murphy played Jonah Bryant (0-3), Will Silvester was up against Lewis Doughty (0-3), Rob Evans played Josh Owen (1-3) and John Ashton faced Ollie Hudson (0-3).
This was our final match of the first half of the season; thanks to the Warrington players for the spirit in which this was played.

Tez & Jonah
Second Half of Season begins
The second half of our NWCSL 2024-25 Season was due to commence on 7 January, however, it was a stuttered start across the whole region due to the severe weather (w/c) 6 January, and the League supporting many Team' requests for a postponement due to difficulties for travel in the snow and icy conditions.
Our Second Team's match, at Tattenhall was also postponed.
Safety has to be the most important consideration at this time. For a Club like ours, however, it does then create further difficulties in re-arranging, with the likelyhood of availability issues for some of our First Team players; in turn, there are consequences for our Second and Third Teams.
Firsts impress at Cheetham Hill
Our away match against mid-table Cheetham Hill on 14 January produced an superb 3-2 result for the Team, with a Man of the Match performance from Josh Davies; having been injured in recent weeks, Josh stormed to a 3-0 win.
Congratulations to other Team members - Owain 3-0, Stan 2-3 (8-11 in 5th), George (3-2) and John (0-3).
First Team
Re-arranged match with Bowdon
Our re-arranged match with Bowdon took place at the Club on 4 February; we lost the match 4-1 but Members witnessed an outstanding match at No.2, with Stan Sykes beating Charles Keeble in five sets - a genuine Man of the Match performance for the ever-improving Stan.
We also said thank you and farewell to George Thomas; George has played for the Club while visiting home over the new year - he flew back to New Zealand the following day.
We also wished Josh Davies well followin an injury retirement in the third set of his match.
Stan is Man of the Match
Huge thanks to our Sponsor
We wish to give thanks to our generous sponsor of both this season and last season, Dave Cadwallader.
The level of support required to maintain a Team, at this level in the "Premier Division" of the North West Counties Squash Leagues is daunting, particularly for a small Club like ours outside of the main conurbations. Such support from Dave is huge and helps bring some world class players into Wrexham.
Thank you to our Sponsor
"Old boys" meet up ... in New Zealand
It's a small world - two former First Team members met at the New Zealand National Squash Championships at Christchurch in early March.
George Thomas, who works as a Coach in the South Island came across our past Club Champion, Tim Arthur - amazing !
George & Tim in Christchurch
It's relegation for our First Team
The 2024-25 Season was exhilerating but did prove difficult in many ways for our Team in the top flight of North West squash. Not least there were issues faced in trying to maintain an appropriate level of quality First Team play / player, consistent with what is expected for the NWCSL First Division.
It became a complex situation to manage with the other regular tournament commitments for those top players, together with the inevitable injuries from time to time.
In that context and, having considered all potential options, as well as speaking with those key people involved, sadly the difficult decision was that the Club should take relegation from NWCSL Division 1.
The intention would be that from September, we have may two Teams in Division 2 for the 2025-26 Season.
It was important that all players and the NWCSL be advised of this decision as soon as possible and that was done.
Being part of the NWCSL Division One has been a really great experience for our Squash Club over the last two seasons; we enjoyed hosting some very high level squash by world class elite players, including the current World Ranked No 4, Joel Makin, it has also put the Squash Club on the map with those top Clubs across the region.
Let's hope that one day soon the Club may be in a position to host top squash again !
2024-25 season completed - how we finished.
These are the final placings for all of our Teams at the end of the 2024-25 Season.

2025 - 2026 Season
Approaching a new season
We met in June to consider the Club's approach to the 2025-26 Season, in particular how we may respond to the self-imposed relegation of our First Team from the top flight of North West squash.
Members felt we could only sustain two teams in NWCSL, one in Division 2 and one in Division 3; we would contact the League on that basis.
For the new Season, two Captains were confirmed as - First Team: Rob Evans and Second Team: Richard Ackerley.
There was also consideration of us starting up a Club' Racketball Team, however, this was not considered to be viable at this time.
The meeting received news of Dhenis Stafford's passing and paid tribute to Dhenis as a member of the Club's Teams.
Season underway with young blood !
With the start of the new season, we were very pleased to welcome possibly our youngest ever player into the First Team.
Playing in his debut match at home for the Club, against Liverpool Cricket 3, young Salah Farrag (13yrs 4mths) had a stunning, unfazed 3-0 win - congratulations. Our Team won this first match 4-1.
Winning start for young Salah
Helping out ... Brookside SC
For the first half of this year's NWCSL season, the Club has agreed to continue a "court sharing" arrangement with Brookside Squash Club, Nr Chirk; this while they get matters sorted following severe flood damage to their courts.
Good start for our First Team
Just five games into the season, our First Team are setting the pace at the top of Division 2 West, most recently beating Tattenhall 2 by 5-0 on 16 October.
Our Second Team, at the same point of the season, are in Division 3 SW, around mid-table.
Our First Team
Welcome back - Hannah
On 23 October we welcomed back Hannah Clark into Team Squash at the Club - a special return as just eight weeks earlier, Hannah had given birth to a beautiful girl, Hallie.
Playing against a Team from Barnton, Hannah won her match by 3-0 [Team won 4-1] - very well done.
A winning return.

Hard work starts to pay ...
Currently, we only have one junior attending the first session of the Squash Wales Academy Squad (North), in Anna Fogerty.
There's no doubt that the additional coaching from Mike Harris is beginning to show, such that it may not be too long before Anna is considered for a move into the higher group of players !

Initiative to engage with local schools
The Club was very pleased to be part of a Squash Wales Schools Initiative at the Club on 3rd December, with Years 3, 4 and 5 pupils from Ysgol Penrhyn, working towards their Off The Wall Progress Awards.
These awards and testing schemes help teachers and coaches deliver a range of activities to develop the skills of their pupils, in particular with their hand / eye co-ordination.
The skills, which are a useful addition to most junior activities, have been designed specifically to help them to develop consistency, take up positive positions on court, be aware of their opponent and develop their understanding of the squash rules.
We were grateful to the support from Tom Rosser (Squash Wales) and to the Headteacher at Ysgol Penrhyn.
Full concentration
Two of our former juniors meet up again at University !
It's been good to hear that two of our former Junior players met up again in December 2025, both playing squash at The University of Liverpool Squash Club.
